1971-04-01 Masao Ohba w pts 15 Betulio Gonzalez, Nihon University Auditorium, Tokyo, Japan - WBA. Referee: Enrique Jimenez. Scorecards: 72-70, 72-70, 71-70. There was no doubt that Gonzalez (112), an aggressive dynamo of a man, came to fight, many booing the verdict after the judges sided with the better boxing from Ohba (111¾) who concentrated on his greater reach to pick up the points. That Gonzales was difficult to hit made it hard for a champion lacking his normal speed and sharpness, and when there were exchanges it was normally the South American who came out on top.

On 23 August, Fernando Cabanela outpointed Lorenzo Gutierrez at the Nihon University Auditorium, Tokyo, Japan to win an eliminating contest. By his victory, Cabanela would be Ohba’s next challenger. With 14 wins in 19 contests, Cabanela had beaten Fermin Gomez, and despite being stopped by Susumu Hanagata had continued to make progress.
