1971-10-25 Ruben Olivares w rsc 14 (15) Kazuyoshi Kanazawa, Aichi Prefectural Gym, Nagoya, Japan - WORLD. Referee: Jay Edson. A punishing fight saw Olivares (117¾) retain his title when he put Kanazawa (118) down three times in the 14th round to win on the three knockdowns in a round ruling, the final knockdown coming at 2.00 of the session. Prior to that, both men had given as good as they got in a fight that tipped first one way and then the other as each strove for an early finish. Unfortunately for Kanazawa, who several times seemed to be on the verge of a kayo win, his tremendous exertions weakened him and ultimately paved the way for his downfall.
By this time Jesus Pimentel was Olivares’ number-one challenger, and they were lined up for a December meeting. The hard-punching Pimentel had been a pro since 1960, having run up 77 wins in 83 contests, 69 of them coming inside the distance. Although beaten by Joe Medel, Chucho Castillo and Kanazawa, Pimentel had defeated Ray Asis, Alex Benitez, Mimoun Ben Ali and Rollie Penaroya, and had won the vacant North American bantam title when stopping Billy McGrandle inside seven rounds.
