1971-11-11 Kuniaki Shibata drew 15 Ernesto Marcel, Ehime Playground, Matsuyama, Japan - WBC. Referee: Chung Yung-Soo. Scorecards: 72-69, 65-71, 71-71. Badly cut over the right eye in the third round, Shibata (125¼) was often unable to get to close quarters, as the challenger would jab him away before connecting with short hooks. Although Shibata came back strongly in the middle rounds, Marcel (125¾) came through in the 12th with a ferrocious attack that had the former hanging on for grim death before he began to fight back strongly. The final three sessions saw both men going toe-to-toe as each looked to turn the contest their way, but although the action was desperate neither was able to land a blow that was decisive enough to do away with the cards.
