1971-12-14 Jose Napoles w pts 15 Hedgemon Lewis, Inglewood Forum, Los Angeles, California, USA - WORLD. Referee: Larry Rozadilla. Scorecards: 8-6, 9-4, 8-7. Having built up an early lead, Napoles (145¼) eventually became frustrated at his inability to knock his challenger out, becoming arm-weary from his efforts. Coming into the final third, Napoles slashed away with both sweeping and short left hooks to no avail as the speedy Lewis (140¾) either took his best shots or cleverly avoided them. In the 14th Lewis even staggered Napoles with a right flush on the jaw, but despite narrowing the points deficit it was not enough.

Due to his good connections, the unrated Ralph Charles would be Napoles’ next challenger. Even though he had been a former European champion and was the current British and Commonwealth champion, Charles was seen to be out of his depth. However, to his credit he had good skills, was game and could punch a bit, and in 42 contests he had won 39 with Johann Orsolics and Jeff White among his victims.
