1972-01-29 Ricardo Arredondo w pts 15 Jose Isaac Marin, Zapote Bullring, San Jose, Costa Rica - WBC. Referee: Jay Edson. Scorecards: 146-142, 146-142, 146-145. Keeping the challenger at bay with left jabs and using the ring well, Arredondo (129) showed great improvement as he skilfully outboxed the man from Costa Rica on his own turf. Although Marin (128½) came on strongly over the remaining three rounds in an effort to turn the fight his way, Arredondo pulled through to receive the unanimous decision despite being almost overwhelmed at times, especially in the last session when he was forced to take some heavy blows to both head and body.
Arredondo’s next challenger would be The Ring magazine’s top-rated William Martinez, whose known record shows just eight fights. Regardless of that, the Nicaraguan, who had beaten Raul Montoya and Antonio Amaya in his last two contests, was clearly more experienced than his record suggested.
