1972-02-05 Antonio Gomez w co 7 (15) Raul Martinez, Cesar Giron Bullring, Maracay, Venezuela - WBA. With the large crowd demanding action after a relatively quiet start, the champion tore into Martinez (124¼) in the third round and knocked him down for the mandatory ‘eight’ following a left uppercut and right cross. Although Gomez (125¼) tried to finish matters there and then, Martinez came back well in avoiding the close exchanges where he was most at risk by staying on the outside. However, in the seventh Gomez finally caught up with Martinez and after pinning him on the ropes smashed in a tremendous right to the body which brought about a count out at 1.34 of the session.
