In becoming the youngest champion in modern-day history, aged 19, the southpaw Villaflor (128¾) outpunched and outboxed the hard-hitting champion in almost every round bar the seventh and ninth. Piling up the points and catching Marcano (128) with any number of solid blows to head and body, the youngster almost put his man away in the 14th before having to withstand a final charge from the outgoing champion in the final session.
