1972-06-16 Hedgemon Lewis w pts 15 Billy Backus, War Memorial Auditorium, Syracuse, New York, USA - NY. Referee: Arthur Mercante. Scorecards: 9-6, 8-6, 7-6. Fighting for the NYSAC version of the title, Lewis (145½) got away well using his longer reach to good advantage and in the second round a solid left hook surprised Backus (146¼) who was forced to take the mandatory ‘eight’ count. Although Lewis continued to score well with left jabs and hooks and built up an early lead, it was noticeable that the Canastota southpaw was getting stronger the longer the fight went on, especially when powering in body shots. Over the last third, with Backus pressing, there was no doubting that Lewis’ early lead was gradually diminishing but he kept his boxing together and held on for a unanimous points win, albeit by only a round on two of the cards.
