1972-06-27 Bob Foster w co 4 (15) Mike Quarry, Convention Centre, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WORLD. Referee: Harry Krause. Giving it his best shot, although Quarry (175) gave the champion a few early problems by the third round he was being jabbed around the ring on the end of a stiff left jab. Swollen under the right eye Quarry came out for the fourth, gamely taking the fight to Foster (173½), but after being hurt by a heavy right a tremendous left hook to the jaw had him down just as the bell rang to end the session. Flat on his back, Quarry was counted out ten seconds after the round had finished.
On his way to a crack at the title, having beaten Tony Montano and Brian Kelly, Pat O’Connor was derailed when he was stopped inside seven rounds by Andy Kendall at the Metro Sports Centre, Bloomington, Minnesota on 14 September. Ranked at number three by The Ring magazine with 31 straight wins to his credit, when O’Connor’s form fell away 15 fights later he retired.
Chris Finnegan, an Olympic gold medallist from 1968 would be Foster’s next challenger. Ranked at number four by The Ring magazine, Finnegan, who had won 23 out of 26 contests since turning pro, was the reigning British, Commonwealth and European champion. A durable and clever southpaw, he had beaten Harry Scott, Eddie Avoth, Roger Rouse, Hal Carroll and Conny Velensek.
