1972-09-29 Venice Borkhorsor w rtd 10 (15) Betulio Gonzalez, National Stadium, Bangkok, Thailand - WBC. Referee: Zack Clayton. The southpaw Borkhorsor (111½) slashed his way to the title with incessant body punching, demoralising the champion and leaving him with a badly bruised liver and kidneys. Gamely, Gonzalez (111½), who was also suffering a gashed mouth, tried to protect his body in the tenth round without success, and at 2.10 he signified that he was pulling out of the contest.

It was announced in October that the South American champion, Servillo De Oliveira, had been forced to retire due to a detached retina. Unbeaten after 15 contests and rated by The Ring magazine as the number-three contender, De Oliveira had been very close to securing a crack at the title immediately prior to suffering his unfortunate injury.
