1972-11-11 Carlos Monzon w pts 15 Bennie Briscoe, Luna Park Stadium, Buenos Aires, Argentina - WORLD. Referee: Victor Avendano. Scorecards: 150-139, 149-139, 149-143. This was Monzon’s hardest defence to date and it went the full distance as the shaven-headed Briscoe (157) continually bulled his way in to work with short hooks to the body and head despite taking heavy punishment. In the ninth round Monzon (158) was forced to hold on after being sent reeling and Briscoe went after him immediately in the tenth. Monzon weathered the storm and in the 13th he had Briscoe, his right eye cut, in real trouble for the first time in the fight, but the latter came back strongly right through to the final bell.
With a projected fight against Monzon under negotiation, Emile Griffith, was placed under suspension for three months by the French Boxing Federation following his ten-round draw against Nessim Cohen at the Sports Palace, Paris, France) on 12 March. The announcement came after an alleged stimulant was found in a urine test prior to the fight. Obviously, this action held up Monzon v Griffith, but negotiations got back on track after the NYSAC could find nothing wrong with Griffith and the French authority merely treated it as a suspended sentence. These actions made it easier to promote the fight in Monte Carlo after negotiations for it to be held in San Remo, Italy fell through.
