1972-12-08 Hedgemon Lewis w pts 15 Billy Backus, War Memorial Auditorium, Syracuse, New York, USA - NY. Referee: Tony Phillips. Scorecards: 10-4, 10-4, 12-2. The return fight between the pair saw Lewis (145) win more convincingly this time round, often scoring at will and repeatedly sending in solid blows from both hands to the head of Backus (145½). Although the southpaw challenger took the fight to Lewis early on he was forced to ship plenty of leather and was made to pay for his aggression when continuing to run into shots. By the seventh Backus was bleeding profusely from cuts around both eyes and unable to work the body to any great affect he was falling further and further behind. Despite having a reasonable 11th Backus failed to build on it and at the final bell the result was a formality.
