1973-03-12 Kuniaki Shibata w pts 15 Ben Villaflor, Blaisdell Centre, Honolulu, Hawaii - WBA. Referee: Walter Cho. Scorecards: 72-70, 71-69, 72-71. Counter punching superbly against the southpaw champion, Shibata (130), moving from side to side, showed great hand speed as he skilfully avoided the heavy left hands aimed in his direction. Although he was stunned in both the sixth and 13th rounds by hard lefts to the jaw, Shibata kept to his game plan as Villaflor (130) continually looked to finish it with one punch. It was close, but Shibata, cut over both eyes at the finish, kept his boxing together to fully justify the win.
