1973-04-15 Rafael Herrera w rsc 12 (15) Rodolfo Martinez, Monumental Bullring, Monterrey, Mexico - WBC. Referee: Octavio Meyran. A tremendously hard-fought battle for the vacant title saw Herrera (117¼) regain his old crown when grinding out a stoppage win over Martinez (117¼), who contested it all the way until considered incapable of carrying on. Herrera, who was floored twice in the eighth round, put Martinez down in the fourth and twice in the 11th before the referee rescued the latter in the 12th on the 0.54 mark. According to all reports this was one of the greatest battles ever witnessed, neither man taking a backward step.
