1973-06-02 Carlos Monzon w pts 15 Emile Griffith, Louis 11 Stadium, Monte Carlo, Monaco - WORLD. Referee: Pierrot Brenbilla. Scorecards: 147-145, 147-143, 147-144. Looking like a fighter who’d had better days, the champion had great difficulty in holding off the 35-year-old Griffith (157) as the veteran frequently beat him to the punch and had him worried. For the opening ten rounds it looked as though there might be a new champion as Griffith absorbed the punches coming his way to outfight Monzon (159). It was only in the tenth that Monzon began to look his real self and by the 12th the fight was shifting away from Griffith. In the 14th Griffith, who was cut on the right eye, came under immense pressure as Monzon loaded up and although he wanted to go all out in the final session the latter comfortably contained him.
