1973-06-02 Roberto Duran w rsc 8 (15) Hector Thompson, New City Gym, Panama City, Panama - WBA. Referee: Nicasio Drake. Never really in the hunt, despite forcing the champion’s left eye to swell up in the sixth following a good right-hand delivery, the smart-boxing Thompson (135) found it tough going, being dropped in the third and cut up in the eighth. At that point, Duran (134½) really set about the Australian, and on downing his man again the referee called it off without taking up the count, the finish being timed at 2.15.

Although unranked and defeated by Ismael Laguna in an earlier attempt to win the world lightweight title, Guts Ishimatsu was signed up as Duran’s next challenger. After losing to Laguna, Ishimatsu had won just three of his next eight contests, but was on six straight wins and had become the Orient & Pacific champion, beating Shinichi Kadota and Kenji Iwata along the way.
