1973-06-23 Jose Napoles w pts 15 Roger Menetrey, Sports Palace, Grenoble, France - WBA/WBC. Referee: Roland Dakin. Scorecards: 149-139, 150-134, 150-137. The champion dominated almost every round in this one, and even in the opening session solid blows to the body alerted Menetrey (145) to what was around the corner. By the third Menetrey was in retreat after being raked with hooks and uppercuts and while Napoles (146) tried his hardest to induce the Frenchman to come forward the bait was not taken. From the ninth onwards Napoles held the centre of the ring and potted Menetrey with left jabs and fast combinations whenever he could, but by now the contest was totally one sided and the Frenchman, who finished with badly swollen features, showed great courage in staying the course.
Napoles’ next challenge would come from the hard-hitting Clyde Gray, rated at number one by The Ring magazine. Gray, who had 40 wins in 43 contests, had beaten Donato Paduano, Ray Chavez Guerrero, Marcel Cerdan Jr, Manuel Gonzalez and Eddie Blay, and was the reigning Commonwealth champion.
