1973-08-14 Koichi Wajima w rtd 12 (15) Silvano Bertini, Makomanai Ice Arena, Sapporo, Japan - WBA/WBC. Referee: Takeo Ugo. Making his fifth defence, Wajima (153¾) once again proved too strong for a challenger when forcing Bertini (153) to retire at the end of the 12th round. Although Bertini had taken a fair amount of punishment the end came as a surprise as he had gone well in the earlier sessions, scoring with solid body shots, and had never looked to be in trouble. After six rounds it had looked like the title was going to change hands, but from thereon it was Wajima who picked it up, crowding his opponent and ripping in solid uppercuts. Bertini later explained that he had retired because his right hand was badly swollen and that blisters on his feet were making life even more difficult.
