1974-02-28 [[Kuniaki Shibata]] w pts 15 [[Ricardo Arredondo]], Nihon University Auditorium, Tokyo, Japan - WBC. Referee: Ray Solis. Scorecards: 149-140, 146-143, 148-144. After 15 dull rounds, Arredondo (129½) left Japan minus his title, having failed to make proper use of his height and reach advantages, while Shibata (129½), who lost the WBA version of the title in his previous contest, put the memory of that first-round defeat well behind him. Undoubtedly having trouble making the weight, Arredondo was unable to keep Shibata from continually boring forward and getting in under his guard to land telling punches. Clearly defeated, Arredondo, who failed to take advantage of any return clause, won just nine of his next 22 bouts before retiring.
