1974-04-11 Guts Ishimatsu w co 8 (15) Rodolfo Gonzalez, Nihon University Auditorium, Tokyo, Japan - WBC. Referee: Larry Rozadilla. Following two failed title attempts it was third time lucky for Ishimatsu (135) after he found the punches in the eighth round to beat Gonzalez (134½), who had previously won 13 straight. Prior to the finish there had been several fierce exchanges but Gonzalez had been kept at bay by Ishimatsu’s flicking left and had been unable to work the body. Fairly even at the start of the eighth, Ishimatsu took over as he began to hurt Gonzalez before dropping him three times, the final occasion seeing the champion counted out with 48 seconds of the session remaining.
