1974-04-27 Chartchai Chionoi w pts 15 Fritz Chervet, Hallen Stadium, Zurich, Switzerland - WBA. Referee: Walter Cho. Scorecards: 69-74, 72-67, 71-68. The first ever world title fight held in Switzerland ended in a riot when the announcer mistakenly declared that Chervet (111¼) had won before the crowd found out otherwise. Chervet had started aggressively, but by the fifth round Chionoi (112), who had begun slowly, began to take over, scoring heavily to both the head and body. Occasionally the Swiss challenger would rally strongly and at the final bell the verdict appeared a formality.
On 18 October at The Gym, Yokohama, Japan, Chionoi forfeited his version of the title before the fight when he weighed in at 115¼lbs for a defence against Susumu Hanagata, the contest going ahead on the basis that if Hanagata (112) won he would be proclaimed champion. There was no doubt that Hanagata was leading after five rounds, his left jab having virtually closed Chionoi’s right eye, and the referee rescued the former champion at 1.27 of the sixth when he was being caught with punches without reply.
