1974-05-25 Rodrigo Valdez w co 7 (15) Bennie Briscoe, Louis 11 Stadium, Monte Carlo, Monaco - WBC. Referee: Harry Gibbs. Fighting for the vacant WBC title, Valdez (156¾) outboxed Briscoe (156½) in virtually every round and apart from a spell in the second when he was cut over the left eye and pinned against the ropes in the second round. By the fifth, Valdez was getting to Briscoe more frequently, jabbing hard and throwing heavy combinations, but the latter somehow remained on his feet to fight on. Briscoe was still able to hurt Valdez, but the Colombian’s punches were more accurate. The seventh saw Briscoe looking to take his man out, hammering in big right hands, only for Valdez to hit back with a vengeance. Setting himself up for the finish, Valdez slammed in a series of solid shots to the head before a final right to the jaw dropped Briscoe on his back and although the American was on his feet at ‘eight’, defenceless and unsteady on his legs he was counted out.
