1974-07-09 Ruben Olivares w rsc 7 (15) Zensuke Utagawa, Inglewood Forum, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBA. Referee: George Latka. Fighting for the title vacated on Ernesto Marcel’s retirement, Olivares (125½) started slowly before scoring well with lefts and rights to the body, while Utagawa (126), looking nervous, went to work on the outside with a long left jab. By the fifth, Olivares, showing all his old power and aggression, was beginning to take Utagawa apart and in the sixth the writing was on the wall as the man from Japan began to crumble. Coming out for the seventh with only one thing on his mind, Olivares dropped Utagawa with a series of left hooks and on resuming the latter was put down again with another left hook. At that point the referee had seen enough and stopped the fight, the finish being timed at 1.29.
