1974-08-03 Kuniaki Shibata w rsc 15 Ramiro Bolanos, Nihon University Auditorium, Tokyo, Japan - WBC. Referee: Anselmo Escobedo. Bobbing and weaving to get inside, the champion made the running throughout and Bolanos (128½), despite having a six-inch reach advantage, was cut over the right eye as early as the first round. Normally a jab-and-move fighter, Shibata (130), scoring well with sharp lefts, dropped Bolanos in the third with a right to the jaw, but was unable to really catch up with his rival until the last session despite having wobbled him in the seventh and eighth. The long jabs from Bolanos had made it difficult for Shibata to get through on occasion, but in the 15th, after cracking lefts and rights to the head had hurt Bolanos, the referee rescued him with just 31 seconds left on the clock.

Despite not being rated by The Ring magazine, Ould Makloufi was next up for Shibata, numbering Tommaso Galli, Elio Cotena, and Joe Tetteh among his 40 wins from 50 contests.
