1974-09-07 Bobby Chacon w rsc 9 (15) Alfredo Marcano, Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBC. Referee: Ray Solis. Having just defeated Danny Lopez (w rsc 9 at the Sports Arena, Los Angeles on 24 May) in a billed American championship fight, Chacon was selected to contest the WBC’s version of the title with Marcano after they had stripped Eder Jofre for failing to defend against the latter. Making a good start, especially with right-hand leads, Chacon (125½) was soon in front. Although Marcano (125½) went toe-to-toe with Chacon at times it was not until the sixth round that he really began to motor, hurting the American with a terrific body shot. Again, in the seventh, having a good round, Marcano badly hurt Chacon, but the latter weathered the storm to hold his own in the eighth through to the ninth. It was in this session that Chacon eventually got through with a terrific right uppercut that dropped Marcano heavily. On getting up, Marcano, who was obviously still dazed, was rescued by the referee at 2.18 before Chacon could land another punch.
