1974-09-21 [[Perico Fernandez]] w pts 15 [[Lion Furuyama]], Sports Stadium, Rome, Italy - WBC. Referee: Roland Dakin. Contesting the title vacated by Bruno Arcari, both men made a slow start and it was the hard-hitting Fernandez (140) who got away first, his crouching style making him a difficult target for Furuyama (140). In the early stages Furuyama was certainly wary of the Spaniard’s hooking ability from either hand, but by the 13th he seemed to be ahead after picking up the pace with his skilful boxing showing up well as he began to concentrate on the body. The last two rounds saw Furuyama going for broke, throwing good uppercuts to head and body, and with Fernandez under a lot of pressure and not really able to respond effectively the split decision in his favour was met by loud boos throughout the arena.
