1974-10-01 John Conteh w pts 15 Jorge Ahumada, The Arena, Wembley, London, England - WBC. Referee: Harry Gibbs. Contesting the vacant WBC title, Conteh (174¼) fought an excellent tactical battle to beat Ahumada (174) and although he failed to knock the latter over he was always in the driving seat. It was Conteh’s left that won the fight for him, both in defence and attack, and he had far more variety than did the Argentinian, who lacked his accuracy. By the two thirds stage with Ahumada tiring, Conteh was well in control and he showed his total domination from the 12th onwards when driving his rival around the ring. Conteh was punch picking at this stage and he never let up right through to the final bell, the verdict in his favour being a formality.
