1974-11-23 Alexis Arguello w co 13 (15) Ruben Olivares, Inglewood Forum, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBA. Referee: Dick Young. After both men made cautious starts, by the fifth round the taller Arguello (124½) was marginally in front by dint of good left-hand work before the champion came with a rush in the middle rounds to shake him up with heavy blows to head and body. However, unable to take Arguello out, Olivares (125½) began to tire rapidly from the tenth onwards, and in the 13th he was put down for a count of ‘eight’ before being counted out on the 1.20 mark, having been dropped heavily from a combination of left and right hooks.

Arguello’s first defence would be against his leading challenger, Leonel Hernandez, a fair puncher who had wins over Enrique Higgins, Ernesto Marcel and Bert Nabalatan to his credit. While beaten four times in 33 contests, two of those defeats came at the hands of Esteban De Jesus and Rigoberto Riasco.
