1975-04-19 Perico Fernandez w co 9 (15) Joao Henrique, Sports Stadium, Barcelona, Spain - WBC. Showing up well with his longer reach, the challenger, making his fourth attempt to win the title, boxed confidently for the first seven rounds as he kept Fernandez (139) at bay while scoring with jabs and body blows. It was not until the closing stages of the seventh that Fernandez came alive when battering Henrique (140) with both hands, and in the eighth he was a transformation when leaping from his corner throwing wild, swinging punches, many of which landed. It was more of the same in the ninth before a tremendous right to the jaw smashed the Brazilian to the deck where he was counted out after just one minute of the session had elapsed.
Having been the undefeated Thai-style champion, after 48 bouts Saensak Muangsurin decided to turn to boxing as we know it, and after two inside-the-distance wins over Rudy Barro and Lion Furuyama he got himself a number five rating and a world title shot. A hard-hitting southpaw, Muangsurin had already proved to be a revelation in his new sport.
