1975-06-28 Angel Espada w pts 15 Clyde Gray, Roberto Clemente Coliseum, San Juan, Puerto Rico - WBA. Referee: Isaac Herrera. Scorecards: 146-143, 147-139, 148-144. Contesting the vacant WBA title, Espada (145¾) concentrated on boxing on the back foot while occasionally opening up with fast right hands that caught Gray (144½) coming in. Despite being handicapped by a cut right eye from the fourth round onwards, Gray continually pressed forward, throwing combinations to head and body, while Espada moved and countered, his left jab being a handy tool that often brought the Canadian up short. It was only in the last five rounds that the Puerto Rican took over, and although he was down briefly in the 14th all three judges voted for him.
