1975-08-23 Jaime Rios w pts 15 Rigoberto Marcano, New City Bullring, Panama City, Panama - WBA. Referee: Servio Tulio Ley. Scorecards: 147-143, 148-141, 148-141. This fight was made after the WBA, who had showed little interest in the 108lbs title, changed their minds when not recognising Franco Udella as the champion and set up two eliminating bouts at the New Coliseum, Panama City - Rios beating Kazunori Tenryu, via a fourth-round kayo on 17 May, and Marcano scoring a 12-round split decision points win over Nicaragua’s John Cajina on 21 June.
On beating Marcano (107½), Rios (107¾) became the seventh Panamanian to win a version of the world title, showing speed, precision and hitting power. Although Marcano was cut on the head in the first and cut over the right eye in the third, he battled away well before being dropped for the mandatory ‘eight’ count in the fifth by Rios, who was cut over the left eye in that session. From then on Rios proved the better boxer of the two, but was staggered in the 13th by a solid right before recovering well and boxing his way sensibly to the final bell.
