1975-09-20 Alfredo Escalera drew 15 Leonel Hernandez, New Circus Bullring, Caracas, Venezuela - WBC. Referee: Ray Solis. Scorecards: 147-142, 144-146, 147-147. Taking the early initiative and opening a cut under the challenger’s right eye in the third round, Escalera (129) looked to be on the way to a quick win at that stage. However, with Hernandez (130) now on his bike Escalera was forced to chase his fleet-footed rival and had little success, often finding the former fighting in spurts before going on the move again. Finally, in the 14th, Escalera managed to catch up with Hernandez, a flurry of punches wobbling him badly, but with the latter fighting back strongly until the final bell whether he had managed to hold on to his crown or not would be decided by the judges.

Ranked by The Ring at number three, the European champion, Sven Erik Paulsen, would be Escalera’s next challenger. A stand-up boxer with a solid wallop in his right hand, Paulsen was undefeated in 17 contests and had beaten Nevio Carbi, Ugo Poli, Lothar Abend, Natalle Vezzoli and Antonio Puddu to secure his high rating.
