1975-10-01 Muhammad Ali w rtd 14 (15) Joe Frazier, Araneta Coliseum, Manila, Philippines - WORLD. Referee: Carlos Padilla. In what came to known as ‘The Thrilla in Manila’, the champion was forced to take all that Frazier (214½) could throw at him in the opening ten rounds before coming on strong himself in the latter stages. Every round was exciting, but from the 11th onwards Ali (224½) came on as Frazier weakened, knocking the latter’s gumshield out in the 13th with a crunching right hand. It now appeared to be only a matter of time and after a torrid 14th for Frazier, who was almost taking punches for fun as Ali continually hit the target, he was pulled out by his corner at the end of the session.
