1975-12-14 Roberto Duran w co 15 (15) Leoncio Ortiz, Roberto Clemente Coliseum, San Juan, Puerto Rico - WBA. Referee: Waldemar Schmidt. The unheralded Ortiz (133½) proved a hard man for the champion to stop, being more than able to stand up to everything thrown at him for almost 15 rounds. There was only ever going to be one winner and that was Duran (135), who was always in control as he overpowered the southpaw Ortiz throughout. Seemingly impervious to punishment, Ortiz took the best that Duran could offer for round after round, but just when it looked as though the fight would go to the judges the effects of a right uppercut saw him counted out with 21 seconds of the fight remaining.
Towards the end of December it was reported that Angel Mayoral, ranked number two by The Ring magazine, was likely to get a crack at Duran sometime in February 1976. Inactive since July, Mayoral had been waiting patiently for his big chance, having beaten Richard Sue, Ray Lampkin and Norman Goins, but for whatever reason the fight never materialised. Eventually, Mayoral got back in action, but on being outpointed by a regular loser in Javier Ayala in April he retired.
