1976-02-20 Alfredo Escalera w rsc 13 (15) Jose Fernandez, Roberto Clemente Coliseum, San Juan, Puerto Rico - WBC. Referee: Waldemar Schmidt. With both men giving it everything, the opening nine rounds had the crowd on their feet as first one then the other took control for short periods. The tenth round was the turning point after the champion staggered Fernandez (130) across the ring with right-left-right to the jaw to bring about an ‘eight’ standing count. Having exerted much energy Escalera (130) was out of gas in the 11th, and by the end of the session Fernandez was back in the fight. Starting fast, the 12th saw Fernandez again on top, hitting the target with wild left hooks before Escalera came back with some heavy blows of his own. Unfortunately for Hernandez his luck ran out in the 13th after he sustained a bad cut under the right eye, an injury that brought the contest to a halt on the 2.13 mark when the referee deemed the injury too bad for him to continue.
