1976-04-01 Alfredo Escalera w rsc 6 (15) Buzzsaw Yamabe, Kashiwa Gym, Nara, Japan - WBC. Referee: Ismael Quinones-Falu. Evenly contested in the early rounds as the champion defended cleverly and punched in bursts, the southpaw Yamabe (130) came to life when pressing forward in the fourth and fifth sessions. The sixth saw a strange ending when the referee called it off after 2.39 had elapsed to save Yamabe, who had a swollen left eye, from taking further punishment. There was no doubt that Escalera (128½) was on top at that stage, having driven his man to the ropes and worked him over for 30 seconds or more without reply, but the referee’s decision was followed by a riot among disenchanted fans.
Some 30 minutes later the Japanese Boxing Commission announced that the result had been changed to that of no-decision on the grounds that there had been no count administered or any consultation with the ringside doctor, a statement which was later overruled by the WBC, who allowed the result to stand.
