1976-04-13 Ben Villaflor drew 15 Sam Serrano, Blaisdell Centre, Honolulu, Hawaii - WBA. Referee: Wilbert Minn. Scorecards: 73-69, 67-72, 70-70. Unable to land his pet left-hand wallop in the early part of the contest, the champion began to appear frustrated in the middle rounds before coming back something approaching his best in the final three rounds despite nursing a damaged right eye from the 13th. By that time though, the lanky Serrano (130) looked to be clearly in front, having scored well with the jab and made good use of the ring. It was only in the 14th and 15th that Villaflor (129) was seen at his best and although he had Serrano in some difficulty when he connected with a succession of heavy left hooks and uppercuts it seemed that he hadn’t done enough to keep his title. Upon hearing the decision, the WBA demanded a rematch on neutral ground within 60 days.
