8 May Carlos Zarate w co 9 (15) Rodolfo Martinez, Inglewood Forum, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBC. Referee: Larry Rozadilla. With 39 victories inside the distance from 40 winning contests, Zarate (116¼) quickly showed that he would not be hanging around as he moved menacingly forward. However, it was not until the fifth that the turning point came when Martinez (115¾) was saved by the bell after being knocked out of the ring. Although he took plenty of punishment, somehow the champion avoided another knockdown until the ninth when a thunderous right to the jaw floored him and saw him counted out with 1.51 on the clock.
