1976-05-22 Victor Galindez w co 15 (15) Richie Kates, Rand Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa - WBA. Referee: Stan Christodoulou. Once again Galindez (174½) was involved in a vicious affair that had the large crowd enthralled for most of the time. An accidental clash of heads in the third round saw the champion suffer a serious cut over the right eye and pandemonium reigned until it was announced that there would be a break of five minutes to allow for the damage to be patched up. From thereon Galindez fought like a wounded tiger in every round and Kates (173¾) showed how durable he was when remaining upright and even trying to fight back under the onslaught. At the start of the 14th with Galindez well ahead he was dropped by a low blow and when getting to his feet he took another one in the groin, which saw Kates warned and told he was losing the round. Although Kates steamed into Galindez in the final session, he was getting the worst of it and eventually two cracking left hooks to the jaw sent him crashing down to be counted out with just one second of the fight remaining.
