1976-05-31 Wilfred Benitez w pts 15 Emiliano Villa, Roberto Clemente Coliseum, San Juan, Puerto Rico - WBA. Referee: Ismael Quinones-Falu. Scorecards: 149-137, 148-137, 150-138. Operating an accurate left jab, Benitez made a reasonable start to the contest as he stabbed in point scorers to the challenger’s face, despite having some difficulty with the Colombian’s southpaw style. By the seventh Benitez was beginning to score well with the right as well and from thereon he took over, apart from a period in the 12th round which saw Villa giving as good as he got in several solid exchanges. Although Benitez peppered Villa, who was cut over the left eye in the 12th, with rights and lefts through to the final bell, there were no knockdowns and while the latter looked to be going down on a number of occasions he hung on to deservedly go the distance.
