Scheduled to defend against [[Rafael Ortega]] on 29 October, Arguello pulled out on the eve of the fight and relinquished the WBA version of the title a few weeks later, in early December, blaming weight-making difficulties and personal problems. Shortly afterwards, the WBA matched Ortega against [[Francisco Coronado]] to decide the vacant title.
