1976-06-19 Alexis Arguello w co 3 (15) Salvador Torres, Inglewood Forum, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBA. Referee: Larry Rozadilla. Coming out swinging with lefts and rights in the opening two rounds Torres (125½) took the champion by surprise, but despite rocking him several times it did not last. Regrouping in the third, Arguello (125¾) saw an opportunity to counter as Torres came charging in, and a perfect right hand to the jaw dropped the latter for the full count at 1.25 of the session.

Scheduled to defend against Rafael Ortega on 29 October, Arguello pulled out on the eve of the fight. A few weeks later, in early December, he relinquished the WBA version of the title, blaming weight-making difficulties as well as personal problems. Shortly afterwards, the WBA matched Ortega against Francisco Coronado to decide the vacant title.
