1976-09-18 Alfredo Escalera w rtd 12 (15) Ray Lunny, Roberto Clemente Coliseum, San Juan, Puerto Rico - WBC. Referee: Waldemar Schmidt. In control for most of the fight, the champion’s aggression and harder punching ultimately proved too much for Lunny (130), who was cut over the right eye in the fifth and had taken a sustained beating in the 12th round before being retired by his corner at the end of that round. There were no knockdowns, but Escalera (130) had stalked his rival throughout and from the fifth onwards had been in total control, despite the clever Lunny making him miss time and again. The problem for Lunny was that he lacked the power to keep Escalera off him and once the cut had worsened, his father, formerly a world-rated fighter himself and in his son’s corner, decided that it was pointless for him to continue.
