1977-05-16 Alfredo Escalera w co 8 (15) Carlos Becerril, Capital Centre, Landover, Connecticut, USA - WBC. Referee: Larry Barnett. Very tough right from the start, Escalera (128½) began well when he knocked Becerril (127¾) down with a solid right near the end of the first session, but the challenger came right back in the second before suffering a cut left eye and having his gumshield knocked out. That set the tone for the remainder of the contest and Escalera was also cut over the left eye in the third. Not only was it being fiercely contested but it was thrilling as first one man and then the other would land heavy punches, and it came as no surprise when the fight ended after Escalera dropped Becerril for the full count in the eighth after landing a burst of vicious lefts and rights to the head. The finish was timed at 0.38.
