1977-10-22 Saensak Muangsurin w pts 15 Saoul Mamby, Open Air Stadium, Korat, Thailand - WBC. Referee: Abraham Echeverria. In a contest that was initially announced as being unanimous in favour of Muangsurin (139½) it was changed the next day as being a split decision when it was discovered that one of the judges had actually voted for Mamby (138). Spending the majority of the fight trying to catch Mamby with heavy southpaw punches the champion discovered that the American was a difficult man to trap, and on several occasions he found himself countered after being made to miss. There was no doubt that Muangsurin landed the harder punches, especially with the left, but Mamby probably hit the target just as much if not more with lesser blows.

Ranked at number eight by The Ring magazine, the African champion, Jo Kimpuani, would be next up for Muangsurin, having won 38 (25 inside) of 39 contests. A durable, hard-hitting fighter, even though Kimpuani had beaten Cemal Kamaci he was relatively unknown.
