1977-10-29 Carlos Zarate w rsc 6 (15) Danilo Batista, Memorial Sports Arena, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBC. Referee: Rudy Jordan. Displaying great courage, Batista (116¼) took the fight to the champion on an equal footing for the first four or five rounds but once the heavy-hitting Zarate (116½) found the range the Brazilian, a pupil of the legendary Eder Jofre, was forced to take a great deal of punishment. Shaken up at the start of the sixth, although still trying to fight back he was put down from a heavy right hand-left hook, and despite getting up at the count of ‘five’ the referee wisely called a halt with 1.32 of the session remaining.
