1977-11-19 Pipino Cuevas w rsc 11 (15) Angel Espada, Roberto Clemente Coliseum, San Juan, Puerto Rico - WBA. Referee: Jesus Celis. Looking to get his old title back, the challenger started well before being dropped by a cracker of a left hook in the second as Cuevas (147) tried to finish early. Although he got up at ‘nine’, Espada (146½) had been badly weakened and had to hang on until making a recovery in the middle rounds when he shook up Cuevas several times with heavy rights to the head. However, by the eighth, Espada’s face was a mess, having been cut under the left eye, but he bravely kept going until reaching the end of the 11th when the doctor advised the referee to stop the bout on the grounds that the latter’s jaw was broken and it was impossible for him to carry on.
