2 December Carlos Zarate w rsc 5 (15) Juan Francisco Rodriguez, Sports Palace, Madrid, Spain - WBC. Referee: Rudy Ortega. The inexperienced Rodriguez (117) actually did quite well for the opening three rounds before Zarate (117¾) cut loose in the fourth, softening the challenger up with vicious body shots. At the start of the fifth it was clear that Zarate was not going to hang around much longer and the game Spaniard, who got up after twice being dumped on the floor in that session, was rescued by the referee on the 1.40 mark when it was clear that he could not take much more punishment.
