1978-01-28 [[Alexis Arguello]] w rsc 13 (15) [[Alfredo Escalera]], Loubriel Stadium, Bayamon, Puerto Rico - WBC. Referee: Arthur Mercante. A new WBC champion was crowned when Arguello (129½) battered Escalera (130) into submission at 2.34 of the 13th round after badly cutting him up with vicious punches from both hands. Having suffered a disputed knockdown in the second, Escalera regrouped before slugging it out with Arguello, which saw him cut over both eyes and suffering a split lip by the end of the fifth. Although missing a fair amount with his much-vaunted right, Arguello’s left was rarely out of Escalera’s face and the position looked hopeless for the champion. However, in the 11th and 12th rounds Escalera made a spirited comeback, even cutting Arguello below the left eye, but in the 13th it was apparent that the former was fighting on empty and when further damage was seen on the bottom lip the referee called it off on the 2.24 mark.
