At the end of a hard-fought contest, although Gushiken (108) had successfully defended the title he could have been easily mistaken for the loser, with both eyes closing fast. Put down in round seven, the speedy Rios (107¼), although subjected to a heavy battering from thereon, somehow managed to survive until he collapsed in his own corner and was rescued by the referee at 2.59 of the 13th.
